Homeschooling is an amazing journey that begins with a vision of how life will be, and then real life kicks in! All parents seem to have this idyllic dream for their children, but over time we realize that they are individuals with strengths and weaknesses. It is one of those weaknesses that has led me down the road of learning everything I can about phonics.

My journey began with reading everything I could get my hands on regarding phonics. I quickly found that the Spalding Method answered many of my questions and made great sense. Before long I learned that Romalda Spalding worked with Samuel Orton and that is where I began to learn more about the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching phonics.

Fast forward about three years and all I can say is that I now know what I want to do when I grow up! I absolutely love learning about phonics and teaching dyslexic children about reading! Who would have thought that I could have such fun while learning all about phonics?

Our First Day – NOT!

I spent the weekend finalizing our lesson plans for the upcoming weeks and getting organized. I had a few things left to do on Sunday and then it hit! I have a fever, the chills, and bodyaches. So our first day of school just isn’t going to happen! At least it isn’t going to happen today. On a bright note though, our dishwasher was installed this morning and so now I can have clean dishes and a dry floor!

Here we go!

As if life isn’t full enough already, I’ve decided that I should foray into the world of blogging. I’m sure there will be plenty to share as I blog about my family, our homeschooling adventure, Orton-Gillingham and why they were unable to install my new dishwasher today. For inquiring minds, there are three places where the water can be shut off and not one of them worked. I guess that’s what happens when you live in a house built in 1956. At least I can go out into our rec room and admire my brand new Kitchen Aid dishwasher sitting in the middle of the room!
